Scripture Reading: John 16:12-15

John 16:12-15 is the last section in this gospel about the Helper, to whom Jesus has repeatedly referred in the sermon on the mount.  "When the Spirit of truth comes," Jesus says, "he will guide you into all truth. . . . He will declare to you the things that are to come.  He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you" (Jn 16:13,14).

The ministry of the Holy Spirit is to bring glory to God the Son.  One way He has done this this is to inspire the writing of the New Testament, which proclaims the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus.

As the Spirit of truth, the Holy Spirit reveals the truth about God and His salvation through His Son.  We have, in this passage, a wonderful statement of the unity within the Trinity.  "All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you" (Jn 16:15).

Without directly mentioning the Spirit's inspiring the writing of the New Testament, one implication here is of the role of the Holy Spirit in the composition of the books of the New Testament.  The book we hold in our hands is a product of the work of the Spirit of truth, bringing to us the truth that exalts Christ, in all His glory.  Let us ever be enthralled by the revelation we have of the majesty and mercy and wonder of the Son of God.
