Scripture Reading: Luke 24:13-35

Different people are thrilled by different experiences.  For the student, it is a high grade point average and excellent test scores.  For the athlete, it is the competition and a championship victory.  For a mother, it is her baby's smile.  For the farmer, it is the summer rain and the autumn harvest.

For the Christian, the deepest joy in life is God, revealed in His eternal Word.   The greatest passion in living, for the person who truly knows God, is the pleasure of a relationship with Him, through Jesus Christ.

This is the way it has always been for the people of God.  Paul said, "For to me, to live is Christ" (Phil 1:21).  Jeremiah said, "Your words were found and I ate them; and your words became to me a joy and the delight of my heart" (Jer 15:16).  David declared, “As the deer pants for flowing streams, so pants my soul for you, O God” (Psa 42:1).

In Luke 24 the disciples on the road to Emmaus felt their hearts burning for the truths that Jesus taught them from the Scriptures.  The heartbeat of the Christian is communion with the living God.  Nothing else comes close in terms of pleasure and satisfaction for the human soul.  And the place where we come to know Christ more and more deeply is the Bible.

Christianity is not just a Sunday morning ritual.  For the Christian it is a fire in the soul … a burning to know the living God.
